An Extraordinary Dayak Longhouse Panel
Borneo, Indonesia, First half of the 20th century

The long wood plank has two creatures facing each other carved in high relief, each similarly shaped with a long snout, long body, and long ringed tail. At one end is a fantasy animal head, also in high relief. These are covered in black and white painted curliques similar to those of the traditional mythological dragon (aso). The board itself is covered with intertwining curls and hooks, centering an abstract head (dragon or demon), all in black and white pigments. In very good condition, appropriate for its age, mediums, and use as an outside panel of a chief's family longhouse. One of the creatures is more eroded than the other, and missing a crest that went from back of head to between its shoulders.
