Description
An Ancient Indo-Gangetic Anthropomorphic FigureUttar Pradesh, India, c. 1700-1200 BC
Fashioned from cast and hammered pure copper, this is an abstract anthropomorphic figure with semi-circular head resting directly on shoulders, scrolling arms, and splayed legs. The surface is heavily patinated and encrusted with dirt.
Note: In the Indo-Gangetic plains, a cluster of copper artifacts was found that can be dated between 1700 and 1200 BC. Among them, a number of anthropomorphic figures follow a distinctive shape with curved downward arms, dome-shaped heads, and spread legs. The pieces that belong to the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in NY (inv. 2001.433.5, 2001.433.7, 2001.433.10) follow more or less the same canon. The findspots suggest these figures were ritually deposited in rivers or marshes. Given that pure copper is a relatively soft metal and most of the objects show little or no signs of wear, it seems likely that their function was largely dedicatory.
