Description
A Yoruba Epa MaskNigeria, Middle part of the 20th century
In the style of or from the workshop of Areogun of Osi Ilorin (ca. 1880-1954). Depicting a warrior riding a horse at center, wearing a wide-brimmed pith helmet and holding a whisk in his right hand and a heavily worked sword or staff in his left. A female is seated on a raised flap on the back of the saddle holding onto the brim of the hat. The Janus helmet at base supports this platform that has eight additional figures standing around the horse, several holding a drum, one with a gong, and a female holds a chicken. In very good condition, cracks on the Janus helmet.
