A Yaka or Suku Headdress
Democratic Republic of Congo, early to mid 20th century

In the form of a stylized owl head, the carved wood mask with remains of red, black, tan, and blue pigments. A carrying handle extends from the chin of the mask, hidden by the raffia. A painted cloth superstructure above with two pointed horns. Raffia collar attached to holes all around the perimeter. In very good condition, much of the pigment flaked and lost from the mask.
