Description
A Unique and Rare Kanak Mask with Headdress, dagakGrand Terre Island, New Caledonia, possibly 19th century
Carved wood, the face blackened in layers of natural black pigments. Attached to the holes in the upper perimeter is a complete headdress constructed of cane strips, sennit, cloth, and layers of plant fibers. This tall headdress represents the traditional high hat (locally called tidi) worn by high-ranking elders in ceremonies. The deeply sculpted facial features and prominent hook nose with bulbous nostrils are characteristics of masks made on northern Grand Terre Island in New Caledonia. Like all Kanak masks, the eyes are not pierced; the wearer looked out through the mouth. A unique and interesting aspect of this mask is that the furrowed brow, downcast eyes and unsmiling, toothless mouth suggest an elder chieftain. It is also quite rare to have the original top saved along with the mask. Dagak masks had various functions between Kanak regions. They were believed to be a representative of various spirits, but were mainly associated with the lives and authority of chiefs. This mask was most likely used during funerary ceremonies of chiefs. It is difficult to determine the exact symbolism and function of dagak masks since traditional ceremonies were abandoned by the early 20th century and many Kanak artworks destroyed by early missionaries and colonial administrators. In very good condition, high points rubbed. With a heavy metal stand.
