A Samoan Tapa Cloth
Samoa, late 19th to mid 20th century

A long wide strip of traditional mulberry bark cloth with rust brown and black paints in rectangular sections, alternating designs of arrows and medallions framed with linear geometric designs. An older example, the bark beaten thin and the colors applied with stencils. Used for seating during feasts and ceremonies. In very good condition, minor stains here and there, small pieces lifted but still attached. Mounted to canvas with a bar and hooks for hanging at one end.
