A Punu or Lumbo Mask (Mukudji)
Gabon, late 19th to early 20th century

A fine old example of a Mukudji (maiden spirit) mask for the Okuyi Society. The facial features are subtly carved, with slit eyes, arching brows, triangular nose and the mouth set in a slight smile. Raised segmented diamond scarification marks on the forehead and at temples. A tall tri-lobed coiffure incised all over in a cross-hatch pattern. Remains of white pigment on the face and pink at front of coiffure. In very good condition, appropriate for its age, mediums, and use. Desiccation or insect damage to the proper right side of the chin, cheek, and proper left side of nose. Custom metal stand.
