Description
A Monumental Igbo Ikenga Shrine FigureNigeria, early 20th century
Carved from a single piece of wood in monumental and complex totemic form. The seated figure naturalistically rendered and seated on a stool holding a human head in one hand and a sword in the other, his head crowned with a pair of horns curling upwards and supporting three tiers of carved images: the first of human heads, the second of birds and geometric motifs, and at the apex a monkey with a curved tail. All of these are emblems of a specific individual or group's identity within an Igbo village, their meaning known only to a select few. It would have been maintained, kept or owned by men and occasionally by women of high reputation and integrity in the society. In good condition, appropriate for its age, origin, and materials, an overall crusty patina from libations and remains of red and white pigments, a crack on the bottom figure's right side, crack in the monkey's body, minor scuffs.
