Description
A Major Urhobo FigureNigeria, Late 19th to first quarter of the 20th century
Of a monumental scale for carvings from the region. The yellow ocher, red, black, and white paints vibrant in color. The seated male figure wears a strikingly large stovepipe hat and a necklace of large coral beads. Under the hat is a forehead band with seven sharply pointed, claw or talon-like hooks. He holds a circular fan in his proper right hand, and a small gourd vessel in his left. All of his body adornments symbolize his important status. In good condition, appropriate for its age, mediums, and use; the center of the platform eroded away, equally the center of the stovepipe hat eroded.
