Description
A Magnificent West African Storage JarWest Africa, c. early 20th century
This finely executed vessel displays an elegant profile, tapering gracefully from a comparatively small base to a wide flaring mouth. A low raised band encircles the shoulder, embellished with four evenly spaced flat knob projections with notches at sides that enhance both the form and tactile presence of the jar. The surface is covered with a mottled, textured gray and brown slip (or glaze-like finish), creating a refined and harmonious appearance. Such jars were traditionally used for storage of water, grain, or other provisions, and their forms often reflect both functional requirements and regional aesthetic preferences. Remarkably well-preserved, this example survives in excellent condition, underscoring both the technical mastery and durability of West African ceramic traditions.
Diameter: 18 ½ inches
More Information: The form and proportions are characteristic of storage jars from the Nupe and Frafra ceramic traditions of West Africa, where rimless mouths, squat profiles, and small applied lugs are common. The surface treatment is more textured and colored — almost stone-like -- than is typical of everyday utilitarian wares, aligning this example with prestige or ceremonial storage jars produced in the 20th century.
