Description
A Magnificent Maori Staff, taiahaNew Zealand, c. 1780-1820
Finely carved hardwood with shell inlay at the eyes. The point carved on both sides in form of a zoomorphic head with pointed brow, diagonal elliptical eyes inlaid with haliotis shell, a stylized beak or mouth, and a long protruding tongue with deep yet delicate carved volutes. All high-ranking Maori carried the taiaha staff as an insignia of their status. Taiahas were used to emphasize points of oratory, for hand-to-hand combat and in ceremonial displays. they are not spears but are essentially designed for parrying and sparring and the spatulate end was the part that could actually harm an opponent. the point, showing a Janus face and protruding tongue, was used for poking and prodding during moments of sparring. The movements associated with taiaha usage were carefully taught, as noted by nineteenth-century observers, training akin to that of fencing or swordsmanship in Europe. In very good condition, the tip of spatulate end bumped, shell inlay of one eye missing.
