Description

A Large Fiji Cannibal Fork
Polynesia, c. 19th century or earlier

Hardwood, with a darkened, slightly oily patina. Four sharp tines opposite the handle, the midsection elaborately carved with a pineapple-like center and cog-like tiers above and below. In very good condition, appropriate for age, origin, and medium; tips of two tines with a minor chip. A sticker inscribed "247" on the handle. With a metal stand.

Called ai cula ni bokola by the Fijians. Up to the 19th century, when internecine warfare and subsequent cannibalism of losing warriors was discouraged, such forks were kept in spirit houses and used by chiefs and deified priests (individuals considered too holy to touch food) to eat human flesh.

Provenance:
William Jamison, Toronto, Canada

Length: 19 ½ inches
