Description

A Kuba Wongo Ceremonial Drinking Cup
Democratic Republic of Congo, c. Mid 19th century

An extraordinary carved wood portrait of a naked Kuba Wongo ancestor, statesman or chief, his potent fertility and authority represented by his large protruding belly and his unmistakable large phallus. He holds his hands behind his back which both emphasizes his belly and phallus and shows his "cool" restraint and patience in dealing with others. He has traditional scarification marks on his belly, thighs, upper arms, nape of his neck, and over most of his face, indicating his status and rise to prominence through age-grade initiation rites. In excellent condition, the high points rubbed and polished from extensive use. Mounted to a wood base.

Provenance:
A Private Collection, New York, NY, acquired in 1989
Helene and Philippe Leloup, Paris
Sotheby's London, November 30, 1981, lot 253: described as a Wongo Palm Wine Cup of Human Form

Height: 7 ½ inches

More Information: In overall excellent condition, the high points rubbed and polished from extensive use. Glossy dark brown patina. No apparent restoration.
