A Dayak Head and Mask
Kalimantan/Borneo, Indonesia, circa early to mid 20th century

One, an expressionistic head from a guardian figure, hampatong. Heavy hardwood with a weathered patina, shell rectangles at the eyes. the other, a rare human face mask (as opposed to the monstrous type) used in the hudoq fertility and harvest ceremonial dances of the Modang and related Dayak people, East Kalimantan. Carved wood with dark red-brown, black, and white pigments. Small woven lidded baskets are suspended by twine as drop earrings. Both in good condition; the head with a large crack on the proper right side, and down the back on the left side. The mask with a wood and metal stand.
