A Dayak Figure
Borneo, Indonesia, First half of the 20th century

Female seated on bench wearing a sarong with numerous arm bands and bracelets. She holds an unidentified horn or drum-shaped object. A gorget or pendant carved in low relief at her upper chest. Delicately carved, fine facial features. Carved from a dense, heavy hardwood. In good condition, cut from a larger post, a crack down her proper left side, cavity from knot in the wood on her left hip.
