Description
A Bahinemo Hook FigureHunstein Mountains, Papua New Guinea, 20th century
Unusually large in scale, this Bahinemo hook figure is organized around an abstract anthropomorphic head at the summit, below which a descending series of hook forms creates the striking openwork structure of the body. The severe reduction of the figure to head and repeated hooks gives it a powerful vertical rhythm, while the overall silhouette remains more wraith-like or spirit-form than a human body. Such works are among the most arresting sculptural forms of the Sepik region, balancing abstraction, spiritual presence, and architectural command. The present heavy wood carving is especially notable for its imposing size; it retains a thin patina consistent with limited use and storage in a ceremonial house or cave. In good condition, appropriate for age, origin, and materials. Custom stand.
Height: 80 inches
Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
