This large-scale study by Tom Lea is a 1:1 scale-up for his major painting, Lone and Wide. The composition emphasizes the vast expanse of the West Texas horizon. The clouds are monumental and fill much of the composition, but the solitary rider firmly anchors the foreground, his jaw firmly set with a determined look on his face. He has traveled a long distance and probably has a long way still to go -- the lot of a cowboy on the open range.
