    A Dutch Silver-Cased Verge Pocket Watch with Balloon Motif to Dial, late 18th century
    Marks to interior case: (lion passant), (crowned leopard), P, TG
    Marks to movement: G Leckey, London, 20039
    2-1/2 inches high x 1-7/8 inches wide (6.4 x 4.8 cm) (including pin)

    Bonhams, Fine Ballooning Art: The Property of a Gentleman, 16 December 1991, Lot. 64 (in part);
    Acquired from the above.

    The pocket watch having exterior Dutch silver repousse case frame with allegorical scenery, interior sterling case housing verge escapement with porcelain dial to face with Roman numeral hour divisions and Arabic numeral minute divisions, face depicting townsfolk observing two balloons in flight.

    The illustration to the clock face depicts Andre Jacques Garnerin's parachute exploits over London on September 21, 1802.

    Exterior case is of Dutch origin and is unmarked. While the movement is engraved with what is perceived to be a London maker, this signature was used by the Dutch to give the impression that the watch was of English (and higher quality) manufacture. The interior case may have been manufactured by Thomas Gooch and the hallmark indicates manufacture in 1770.

    Condition Report*: Lot is without key, clock face dates to circa 1802, push-button and clasp mechanism likely replaced with apparent rivet, chain pin an apparent replacement, light denting to body of interior case, flaking to porcelain dial at catch release, errant scratching, with wear commensurate with age and use. Heritage does not guarantee the working order or completeness of mechanisms.
