    A Rare and Large Pierre-Philippe Thomire Empire Gilt Bronze and Verde Antico Marble Allegorical Mantel Clock Depicting the Intervention of the Sabine Women, circa 1810
    Marks to clock face: Galle, Rue Vivienne, Paris
    36 h x 30-1/4 w x 12-1/2 d inches (91.4 x 76.8 x 31.8 cm)


    An identical example to the present lot was acquired by King George IV and appears in the 1812 & 1826 Royal inventories at Carlton House before being moved to Windsor Castle in 1828. Thomire borrowed the classical imagery from Jacques-Louis David's 1799 painting depicting the events following the abduction of the Sabine women by the founding generation of Rome.




    Condition Report*: Front and reverse dust covers missing, resoldering to pendulum swing armature, movement sits slightly off center and probably alludes to a period-correct (though non-original) replacement, pendulum suspension bracket missing and in need of restoration, damage to crest of movement case visible to reverse, missing some mounting screws and center woman remains mounted with difficulty, foot to center woman holding baby missing pin and bolt, some decorative trim and figure to lower marble plinth missing, minor flaking to marble, soldier missing sword blade, some frieze pieces with movement, some flaking near barrel holes to clock face, clock face with some hairlines, some replaced screws, with wear commensurate with age and use. Heritage does not guarantee the working order or completeness of clock mechanisms. Later key and pendulum are included with the lot.
