Although the train station shown here has not been positively identified, it may depict the railroad depot at Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Contemporary photographs of that station, which was torn down decades age, show a very similar structure. The Frisco Line of railroads ran trains through Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma and Texas. The city of Frisco, Texas was named after this rail line.
The railroad was always a principal theme in Benton's work and a symbol of industry and modernity invading the agrarian traditions of the Midwest. It features prominently in three of his most noteworthy images, Going West, The Race, and Wreck of the Ol' 97.
Franklin Riehlman: Embracing couple a nice touch.
Brian Roughton: Attribution is okay. Nice painting.
Gavin Spainerman: Excellent.
