Dr. Stainton points out that the London banker William Esdaile (1759-1837) was one of the most distinguished collectors of drawings of his period and owned over 100 Gainsborough drawings. Dr. Thomas Monro (1759-1833), best known as the early patron of J.M.W. Turner, assembled a collection of around 130 Gainsborough drawings.
