    Black chalk and grey wash on paper
    9 x 10-1/2 inches (22.9 x 26.7 cm)
    Bears signature from a later hand lower left: Gainsborough
    Initialed lower right in the hand of collector William Esdaile: WE
    Inscribed verso in the hand of William Esdaile: 1833 WE 12. Dr. Monro's sale. Gainsborough

    PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION, FLORIDA

    PROVENANCE:
    Dr. Thomas Monro, London;
    Christie's, London, Dr. Monro sale, June 26, 1833;
    William Esdaile, London, (Lugt 2617), purchased from the above;
    Christie's, London, English Drawings and Watercolors, May 25, 1971, lot 148;
    Purchased by the present owner from the above.

    NOTE:
    We would like to thank Dr. Lindsay Stainton for her gracious assistance in cataloguing this lot as a Gainsborough drawing from the late 1770s-early 1780s. Dr. Stainton points out that the London banker William Esdaile (1759-1837) was one of the most distinguished collectors of drawings of his period and owned over 100 Gainsborough drawings. Dr. Thomas Monro (1759-1833), best known as the early patron of J.M.W. Turner, assembled a collection of around 130 Gainsborough drawings.

    Condition Report*: Lightly toned throughout and minor staining around extreme edges; very minor scattered foxing; some areas in the sky appear whiter than the overall tone.
