Paulina Reyes for kate spade new York™
kate spade was founded in 1993 with an initial line of geometric handbags constructed from satin-finished nylon that sparked an instant sensation. The firm, which now employs dozens of designers, creates lines of handbags, shoes, luggage, paper goods and housewares.

Paulina Reyes, a designer for kate spade new york and a native of Mexico City, traveled to Bolivia to develop a series of handbags in collaboration with local carvers and weavers.

"These talented craftspeople are spending a lot of time creating things that there might not yet be a market for, such as woven fans. We hope that by promoting the fact that these communities are doing this work with sustainable materials, this project will help create interest from people who can help with distribution," says Reyes.

Design for a Living World asks us to think about the products we use-where they come from, how they are made and the impacts they have on our planet.

The Nature Conservancy invited ten designers to create new OBJECTS from sustainable MATERIALS sourced from the world. Wood, plants, wool and other organic materials were transformed into intriguing objects, revealing extraordinary stories about regeneration and the human connection to the Earth's lands and waters. Together, designers and consumers can reshape our material economy and help to advance a global conservation ethics by choosing sustainable materials that support, rather than deplete, endangered PLACES.
