Description
Large Rectangular Panel with Schematic Figure at CenterSihuas
A.D. 100 - 400
Cotton, camelid fibers
Height 63 1/8 in. Width 74 3/8 in.
The vertically-oriented small central rectangle contains a schematic standing frontal figure in red, blue, and white on a light buff natural fiber ground. From this, four step-edged rays in indigo and deep red create a dominant X-shaped design. These end in hooks, as do a smaller set of stepped diagonal rays running parallel to and on the center-facing edges of the larger ones. The hooked endings of this secondary set are all four turned to face the textile's bottom edge. A wide central vertical band in alternating red and blue is edged with toothed forms and ends at top and bottom in antenna-like hooks. Thinner, toothless bands create a centered horizontal axis, these also with similar outward-facing end hooks. The four triangular areas reserved top and bottom at either side of the vertical bar have block-like, radically conventionalized profile human heads in indigo and dark red. These face inward, their tops toward the textile top and bottom edges. A natural buff eye and "tear" line complete the images. At either side a relatively narrow band has been reserved, which contains three complete outline-rendered schematic figures, with slightly differing geometric fillers at the top on either side. The figures "face" inward, as indicated both by a raised hand on the inside and a striped tail at the outside. Their C-shaped bodies are oriented in part outwardly and in part inwardly.
The condition is poor. There is extensive replacement and staining of the white ground, especially in the upper right quadrant. While many segments of the primary patterning have patches, a majority of original remaining patterns insures an accurate understanding of the entire design.
