Description

Large Mantle
Sihuas
A.D. 100 - 400
Camelid fiber, cotton
Height 55 in. Width 76 7/8 in.

The design is organized around a large X-shape centered by a rectangle. On a white ground this central rectangle contains a radically stylized human figure with arms and legs forming a disjointed X, the axis of which is perpendicular to that of the large X-shape. All of the linear design extensions progress in steps, which give great vibrancy to the entire surface. The overall mantle rectangle is completed by four pyramidal units in the outer spaces formed by the central X. Two of these, taller and narrower in proportion, have a double-headed serpent motif around an ambiguous central unit. The shallower, broader pyramidal spaces are filled with symmetrically balanced geometric stepped-terrace shapes. The implied overall ground color is white, with the other principal colors being dark hues of a least three shades of blue and two of cochineal red. Small squares of pale gold appear solely in the central motif. The overall condition is fair, with numerous loss areas and some replacement patches.
