DescriptionXAVIER GONZALEZ (1898-1993)
Ice House, early 1940's
Oil on canvas
30in. x 40in.
Signed lower right
Signed and titled verso
Like William Lester, this 1940's work by Xavier Gonzalez retains its regionalist subject matter but is more abstract and utilizes broad planes of color. The ice house in this painting, which should be a source of refreshment in the hot El Paso summer, has now become derelict. It is surrounded by architectural remnants to the right and a dead cow skeleton to the left. Like its companions, ice houses were no longer needed in the 1940's, as household refrigeration became commonplace.
Provenance: Estate of Xavier Gonzalez
