    LLOYD LOZES GOFF (American, 1918-1982)
    Apple Harvest, 1936
    Tempera and oil on canvas
    18-1/4 x 30-1/4 inches (46.4 x 76.8 cm)
Signed and dated lower left: Lloyd Goff 1936
Titled, signed, dated, and inscribed verso: "APPLE HARVEST" / by Lloyd Goff Aug-Oct, 1936 / N.Y.C. / for art project

Dallas-native Goff studied in Dallas with Frank Reaugh, Frank Klepper, Martha Simkins, and Thomas Stell; in Chicago at the Art Institute; and in Paris. He painted murals for the Cooper, Texas, and Hollis, Oklahoma, post offices under the New Deal, and assisted Paul Cadmus on other mural commissions. Goff later taught at the University of New Mexico and moved to New York where he died.

Apple Harvest is an especially nice example of Goff's Regionalist work. Not only is the subject consistent with other rural, agricultural images being produced within the Regionalist canon in the 1930s, but stylistically the painting is harmonious with the work of the Kansan John Steuart Curry and the New Mexico artist Ward Lockwood in particular. The inscriptions on the back are a bonus; the "art project" inscription may refer to many of the federal New Deal art projects then underway in the 1930s. The medium-oil and egg tempera-is likely an approach he learned from Thomas Stell, who greatly admired and emulated the "Italian Primatives" who used this combination. Apple Harvest is a rare opportunity for collectors of Texas Regionalism.
