In 2008, Landscape Sketch was among works shown at the Dallas Museum of Art in "Bluebonnets and Beyond: Julian Onderdonk, American Impressionist" (catalog 104). This exhibition celebrated the role of Julian Onderdonk as landscape painter who transcended regionalism even as he fathered a regional school of Texas landscape painting, which is rooted in the larger American Impressionist movement and is still strong today. The depths of this luminous wood reveal rich browns, umbers, greens, mauves and purples. The artist has used painterly brushwork to sketch a jewel-toned forest in the dying autumn twilight. This painting shows the influence of Tonalism, a style where one dominant color is used to create mood. Landscape Sketch has a quality of light that imbues the landscape with a Romantic sense of spirituality. When referring to this painting in the exhibition catalog William Rudolph discusses the artist's years in New York (1901-1909). Having studied for some time with William Merritt Chase, this painting comes from a period when Onderdonk was taking his mentor's advice, "exploring New York City and Staten Island, searching for the location that would provide inspiration."
