    J.B. ERWIN (1920-)
The Mecca - Harry Hines at Lombardy Lane, 1970's
    Oil on masonite
    12in. x 16in.
    Signed lower right

J.B. Erwin was born in 1920 in Jacksboro, TX and graduated from the University of Texas School of Architecture in 1943. He began watercolor painting as a way to relax after a hard day of drafting, creating pieces that were lyrical non-objective abstractions, considered very progressive for their time. Erwin painted throughout his stint in the Navy during World War II, and had one of his watercolors included in the annual exhibition of the California Watercolor Society in 1945. He was also featured in a one-man show of his Pacific-based works at the Dallas Museum of Art in 1946.

In 1950, Erwin took up oil painting with the encouragement of his neighbor, Reveau Bassett. Although he was not a fan of the medium at first (he felt that oils were not as vibrant as his beloved watercolors), he soon took to the new paints and later commented that he couldn't imagine himself working in any other way.

Rather than create in a studio, as is common for most artists, Erwin prefers to work outdoors painting his subjects - which includes old country churches, farms, feed stores, rail yards, neighborhood homes, and industrial sites - from life rather than from reference (it's very easy to see how his early architectural training influenced his choice of subject matter). His work reflects a nostalgic sensibility that evokes the sights and spirit of a bygone time. Just as famed illustrator Norman Rockwell created images of America of earlier days, so, too, does Erwin capture the flavor of old-time Texas that still brings back fond memories for many who view his paintings.

A Dallas "institution," The Mecca is one of Texas' legendary eateries. Texas royalty, politicians, local celebrities, professional sports stars, and plain ordinary Texans rub shoulders at this famous breakfast "joint."
