DescriptionFRIEDRICH WENZEL (1827-1902)
Longhorn Chair, before 1900
38 x 32 x 26 inches (96.5 x 81.3 x 66.0 cm)
Friedrich Wenzel, horn furniture maker, was born in Bohemia. In 1853, he immigrated to Indianola, Texas, and settled in San Antonio. He soon established a cabinet making business. In 1880, Wenzel expanded his business to include the manufacture of horn furniture. In the next ten years he crafted some of the most innovative horned furniture ever made. His works received awards of merit at the Cincinnati Industrial Exposition of 1883, the New Orleans Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition of 1884-1885, and the Southern Exposition of Louisville, Kentucky in 1886. Between 1880 and 1890, his furniture was sold throughout the United States and Europe. His patrons included Queen Victoria, Otto Von Bismark, and Kaiser Wilhelm I. Wenzel died in 1902, around the time the supply of horns, due to declining Longhorn herds, were disappearing. His furniture is displayed in museums across the United States.
