Born in Germany, Fred Darge came to America in 1924 and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. During the early 1930s, he worked as a cowhand in the Southwest. After 1945, Darge began making annual sketching trips to West Texas and New Mexico. Part of Darge's charm as an artist is his naïveté with respect to anatomy and certain details. The Posse, a fabulous example of his work, captures the desperation and peril of the rider being chased. This piece, along with other works in this auction, span many of his most popular subjects and are of a very high quality.
