An important Spruce painting, White Cow was exhibited first at Mortimer Levitt Gallery (his dealer in New York City). It was exhibited again in 1959-61 at the Everett Spruce Retrospective circulated by the American Federation of the Arts.
Everett Spruce was a keen observer of the Texas landscape, native plants, and wild and domestic animals of the state. His brand of Regionalism and Modernism, while honoring the tradition of folk artists, made him one of the true giants of Early Texas Art. The eminent print dealer and art historian Carl Zigrosser called Spruce "a painter of considerable power and originality."
