A landscape painter and illustrator who was trained as an architect at Texas A&M, Buck Schiwetz worked in Dallas and Houston before studying at the Art Students League in New York. Settling in Houston in 1929, Schiwetz worked for an advertising firm and produced numerous illustrations for Texas publications. Upon retiring in 1966, he traveled across the state and focused entirely on painting and drawing. In 1974, he lived in College Station while making illustrations of his alma mater, published as Buck Schiwetz' Aggieland: A Portfolio of Eight Scenes from Texas A&M University (College Station, 1976). Imbued with a wonderful sense of immediacy, Schiwetz' sketches and watercolors serve as a pictorial record of rural and urban sites across Texas.
