    Something on the Shore, 1952
    Oil on masonite
    24in. x 34in.

William Lester was one of the artists instrumental in the development of a Texas Regionalist style. In the 1930's this style was a synthesis of the regionalism of Thomas Hart Benton, Italian Quattrocentro painters, and 20th Century Surrealism. By the 1940's Lester's treatment of regional subjects became more abstract. His depictions of local scenes, people at work and play, and local buildings became dominated by broad planes of color leading to almost complete abstraction after 1960. William Lester is one of the "giants" of Texas Art with work represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the American Embassy in Paris.

Something on the Shore retains the surrealist character of William Lester's 1930's works, but like most of his 40's and 50's work, reveals a more abstract treatment with the use of broad planes of color. Lester's emphasis of regional themes, in this case, a washed up piece of driftwood on the Texas Gulf Coast is a favored subject.
