Born in Atchison, Kansas, Ward Lockwood studied at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Académie Ranson in Paris. He taught painting at several universities, including the University of Texas, Austin. Throughout his career, Lockwood painted in many different styles and was influenced by Modernism, Cubism, Surrealism, Constructivism, and Abstract Expressionism.
