Ms. Ann Ekstrom, Fort Worth, Texas.

Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, Texas, "Lone Star Still Lifes," n.d., loaned by the Mrs. Richard W. Ekstrom Collection.

American History Books was first shown in 1945 as part of a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Samuel P. Ziegler. The exhibit of eighteen pictures was staged in the Texas Christian University art rooms and revolved entirely around the theme of "books." Each of the eighteen artworks was flatly painted and devoid of any lettering on the spines or covers which might indicate the content of the books. Instead, cleverly selected accessories and background treatments were used to suggest the books' subject matter. In American History Books, an American flag draped around a bust of George Washington conveys the meaning of the painting. Other paintings in this series included, Law Books, Books on Marine Life, Books on Relativity, Space and Time, and Who-Done-It Thrillers and Mystery Books. A contemporary account of this exhibit described the pictorial content of Who-Done-It Thrillers and Mystery Books thusly: "A red-skinned female, frightened and screaming, appears before a maze of mirrors, in front of which are the usual accompanying accessories of crime."

    Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000.
