William Reeves Fine Art, Houston, Texas, September 15, 2007, lot 50.

Studio, by Ruth Tears is a sophisticated example of Texas Modernism. It tells the story of an artist with a deep understanding of the art movements that had preceded her. In Studio, Tears tackles a subject that has engaged many artists since the late Renaissance, when they were beginning to be recognized as more than just craftsmen. Some famous examples of paintings of artist's studios and workshops include Henri Matisse's Red Studio (1911), Gustave Courbet's The Artist's Studio (1855), Jan Vermeer's The Art of Painting (ca. 1666-1673), and Rembrandt's An Artist in his Studio (1629). These works are particularly interesting because they can offer so much insight into an artist's life, methods, influences, and, probably most importantly, how they imagine themselves as artists. Studio reveals Tears as an artist deeply interested in Modernism. The vibrant colors, flattened perspective, and lack of human figures represent an abstract interpretation of the studio, in both style and concept.
