DescriptionMARY NELL BROOKS NICHOLS (1912-1975)
Untitled Abstract, 1963
Oil and acrylic on board
16 1/2in. x 11 1/2in.
Signed lower left
This painting shows the influence of Mary Nell's brother, James Brooks, the New York School Abstract Expressionist. The spontaneous qualities of the oil-acrylic emulsion allow the masses of color to dissolve and float on top of one another. A dynamic tension is created, which leads the eye to rove around an amorphous composition.
Estate of Mary Nell Brooks
