MARGARET PUTNAM (American, 1913-1989)
    Break Blue Pennant
    Oil on canvas
    56 x 38-1/2 inches (142.2 x 97.8 cm)
    Signed lower left: M Putnam

San Antonio artist, Margaret Putnum was mostly self-taught, with some background in fashion illustration. She was an innovator throughout her
career, experimenting with many techniques, mediums, and styles. Putnum was also an inspiration to those who knew her, never letting her fight
with Lou Gehrig's disease keep her from painting almost every day well into her eighties, even when she was partially paralyzed and confined to
a wheelchair. Her expressive, abstract paintings, like Break Blue Pennant, are extremely powerful works of art, and reveal the strong influence of
artists like Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky, and Willem De Kooning. In Break Blue Pennant, she attacks the canvas with broad stokes of paint
and a passionate intensity, completely fearless, as if expressing her vibrant personality through art in a way that her health would not allow in other
    aspects of her life.
