John Ladd is a photographer, collector, and printmaker from the Texas Panhandle. His subject matter involves the characters and landscape that make up his everyday existence, as well abstracting from these images an early modernesque-style of art. His work is known for its humor, and edge and use of light. He studied with Earl Stroh in Taos, worked as an art professional, and has a deep connection to the environment, to early modernism, and to his subject matter.

Growing up in the Panhandle, John Ladd worked for Stanley Marsh at his estate, "Toad Hall," and being around Stanley influenced John's own particular form of whimsy. Marsh, a millionaire, artist, philanthropist, and prankster from Amarillo, is best known as the sponsor of the Cadillac Ranch, and his ongoing project of hundreds of mock traffic signs throughout Amarillo, such as "Lubbock is a Grease Spot," and "Road Does Not End."

This portrait was taken in Stanley Marsh's office in Amarillo, Texas.
