DescriptionJAMES SURLS (American, b. 1943)
Wood and wrought iron
18-1/2 x 46 x 14 inches (47.0 x 116.8 x 35.6 cm)
Marlborough Gallery, New York.
In this sculpture, James Surls has visualized an abstract interpretation of the Texas landscape. The flower-shaped windmill and curved branches rise out of a block of wood. The branches resemble both the scrubby trees of West Texas and the longhorns of the cattle which populate the landscape. Surls' sculptures have been shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
