    Oil on canvas laid on panel
    36 x 30 inches (91.4 x 76.2 cm)
    Signed and dated lower right: Dawson-Watson / 1931

    Sale: Sloans & Kenyon, Chevy Chase, Maryland, February 17, 2013, lot 1448;
    Acquired by the present owner from the above.

    English immigrant, Dawson Dawson-Watson began living part-time in San Antonio, Texas in 1917 after teaching art in New York and Missouri for over a decade. Dawson-Watson officially settled in San Antonio in 1926 in order to compete in the Texas Wildflower Exhibition where he won the first national prize. He would continue to exhibit successfully in the North America as he previously did in Europe -- gathering accolades from the Royal Academy in London, 1886 and the Paris Salon, 1888 to the Southern Arts League, 1931 and Mississippi Art Association, 1930. However, it is his impressionist landscapes, particularly of Texas, that Dawson Dawson-Watson truly realized his art. With an atmospheric tone and colorful palette, these hazy renderings of nature soften the saturated colors innate in landscapes of West Texas and the Texas Hill Country. While his loose, yet controlled brushwork lends a romantic tone and movement to the beautifully rendered static cacti that became Dawson-Watson's forte. The curved arcs of the Cactus are often mirrored in the lines in the surrounding landscape - bowed tree limbs, distant hills, and waves of grass - culminating into a living, moving scene that is grounded by a prickly pear.

    Condition Report*:

    This work appears to be in overall good condition; under UV light, there appears to be inpainting along the top and down the left edges, as well as a triangular area of inpainting at the lower center of the painting (approx. 10 x 15 inches); a few of the blossoms in the cacti appear to also fluouresce under UV light. Framed Dimensions 41.5 X 35.5 Inches
