DescriptionW. FREDERICK JARVIS (1898-1966)
Creek Near Big Bend
Oil on canvas
28 x 36 inches (71.1 x 91.4 cm)
Signed lower left
This major Frederick Jarvis canvas is the first Big Bend painting that has ever been to auction. Jarvis chose a creek-bed road crossing as the setting for this painting. By the color of the trees, it is apparent it is autumn. A large area of desert wildflowers are visible beyond the creek bed. Big Bend has two wildflower seasons; fall and spring, due to seasonal rains, and the abundance of plant life indicates Jarvis was painting in a year of plentiful moisture.
Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000.
