Born in the mid-1880s in Gainesville, Texas, Pearson grew up with a pencil in his hand always sketching or drawing. He had little opportunity for formal training living so close to Indian territory. He worked variously for a cotton oil company as a clerk and for the railroad as a steam-engine fireman. The continuous urge to draw revealed itself by the use of crayon on the side of box cars. He was quoted as saying he "had his pictures on these car walls strung from Galveston clean up to the north end of the Santa Fe line."
In 1903, Pearson, still drawing and painting, quit his job with the railroad to make the plunge into being a full-time artist. He continued to paint while taking formal instruction on art.
There are two notable characteristics of Pearson's painting that make them attractive to a great number of people. He has a fine sense of perspective and is extraordinarily sensitive to atmospheric color effects. He was acclaimed in Texas for his bluebonnet and cactus paintings.
