    Description

    JULIAN ONDERDONK (1882-1922)
The Road Through the Meadow, 1909
    Oil on canvas
    20in. x 30in.
    Signed lower left
    Signed, dated, and titled verso

This painting is composed so that nearly sixty percent of the painting is sky and clouds. The clouds are masterfully rendered. A mauve underpainting provides shadow. Onderdonk has purposefully left the paint thin around the cloud edges to let the underpainting show through. The rich thick impasto and lively brushstrokes of the central and surrounding clouds are hard to capture by photograph, but in person these clouds come alive.

The foreground is in shadow, but the midground is lit with sunlight. Both the road and the creek serve as compositional devices to direct the eye to the farm house and the red roofed barn. The water in the creek reflects the whites and blues of the clouds and sky.

The painting is in a remarkable state of preservation -- original canvas with no losses, no inpainting, no lining, no cracking, and impasto completely intact.
