DescriptionJULIAN ONDERDONK (1882-1922)
Late Afternoon, 1909
Oil on canvas
14in. x 20in.
Signed lower left
In 1906 Julian Onderdonk, who was living in New York, accepted a job organizing the State Fair of Texas annual exhibitions. In 1909 he moved back to Texas permanently.
It is impossible to know where this scene was painted. Several contextual clues should be noted. Short windblown trees dominate the midground. A rocky outcrop is located at the left edge of the painting. The cabin has a porch indicated by two vertical brushstrokes at the edge of the roof line. It is plausible this painting is a Texas scene.
