In 1901 Julian Onderdonk moved to New York where he undertook studies at the Art Students League with Kenyon Cox. Later his studies expanded to include instruction with William Merrit Chase, Frank Vincent DuMond and Robert Henri.

This Tonalist painting of New York's Central Park by Onderdonk was painted very near the turn of the century. It's atmospheric effects of moisture and the early morning light are skillfully rendered.
