The following excerpt is from, The Life of Porfirio Salinas, by Mrs. Porfirio Salinas:

Also about this same time, Mr. Hugo A. Herbeck met Porfirio. Mr. Herbeck had been wanting to meet the "maestro," as he started to call Porfirio from the beginning. Mr. Herbeck came over to our house to show Porfirio one of his paintings and get an opinion on his work. Porfirio would tell him what to do here and there, while doing a painting himself. After a while, he brought his family over, and we remained very good friends throughout the years. Porfirio called him many times to come over to paint at his studio, and I am sure that Mr. Herbeck appreciated the fact that he was one of the two persons that ever worked in Porfirio's studios. Although a few local artists claimed to have worked with Porfirio in his studio, the only ones who ever did were Louis Rodriguez and Hugo A. Herbeck.
