    FRANK REAUGH (1860-1945)
    The Barn
    Pastel on grit paper
    3-1/2 x 6-3/4 inches (8.9 x 17.1 cm)
Unsigned, authenticated by Mr. Michael R. Grauer
    Titled lower right

According to Michael R. Grauer, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Art at the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum, and Frank Reaugh expert:

I have examined carefully the scans you sent me of pastel "The Barn". Based on the subject and palette, I believe the pastel is a good example of Mr. Reaugh's work from about 1880 to 1885. I believe "The Barn" may be from a group of pastels Mr. Reaugh painted before he moved from Terrell to Oak Cliff. These pastels tend to have a greenish cast, largely due to Mr. Reaugh's practice of covering the entire surface of the paper with an olive drab color to function as underpainting. The group of paintings including "The Barn" was probably completed before Mr. Reaugh saw his first color paintings during a trip to new York in 1883.

"The Barn" is a fully finished painting and stands alone as a fine work of art. As far as my files indicate, I find no exhibition record for this painting. But that is not unusual as Mr. Reaugh often sold frequently directly from his studio. The inscribed numbers "649" and "735" probably correspond to entries in one of Mr. Reaugh's many painting ledgers.
