    CLEMENTINE HUNTER (1886-1988)
    Melrose Auction
    Oil on canvasboard
    18in. x 24in.
    Signed lower right

The Melrose Plantation represented a vanishing way of life. In 1969, the son of Cammie Henry died, and the Melrose was purchased by the Southdowns Land Company, which donated seven acres of the Melrose property to the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches. Sanchez Auction Galleries of New Orleans was responsible for the sale of the contents of the house and out-buildings. The auction took place on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, 1970. Clementine was there to witness the end of her friend Cammie Henry's Melrose Plantation.

This painting by Hunter documents the auction. Clementine finally left the Melrose in 1977. The plantation's new owners did not need laborers like it had in the past. Clementine moved to a trailer house where she continued to paint.

Shelby R. Gilly, author of the book Painting by Heart -- The Life and Art of Clementine Hunter, Louisiana Folk Artist, published by St. Emma Press in 2000, and Clementine Hunter's dealer, says the following about the painting Melrose Auction:

"This original Clementine Hunter painting depicts an auction at Melrose Plantation outside Natchitoches, Louisiana, where Clementine lived for most of her life. The main house of Melrose is not pictured, but the African House (a circa 1750 landmark) is in the middle of the painting. Sale items are shown scattered on the grounds around the African house. An armoire, a dresser, and one of Clementine's Zinnias paintings are among the items for sale on the left side of the painting. A large black pot is shown in the bottom-left. On the right is a wagon with two figures sitting on it. Among the figures in the wagon is the auctioneer, calling out bids through a megaphone. In front of the house is a lady seated selling food and drinks. Clementine herself is shown sitting in a chair in the bottom right. The background is pink, and the signature is in the lower right-hand portion of the piece and is indicative of the painting's originality and date."

Accompanying the painting are two photographs of Clementine Hunter and a signed copy of the book Painting by Heart -- The Life and Art of Clementine Hunter, Louisiana Folk Artist, by Shelby R. Gilley, and an appraisal of the painting by Shelby R. Gilley.
