A French Partial Gilt Silver, Seed Pearl and Enamel Mounted Cut-Glass Scent Bottle attributed to Jean-Valentin Morel and Charles-Edmond Duponchel, Paris, France, circa 1850
    Marks: (rubbed mark)
    4-3/8 inches high (11.1 cm)

The heavy and faceted cut-glass bottle with hinged lid adorned with translucent green, and opaque blue and white enamel, surmounted by an unusual lounging putto blowing a seed pearl bubble, applied high-relief climbing putti on gilt cartouches to obverse and reverse, above gilt cagework to the terminal, bottle is fitted with a glass stopper.

Note: A scent bottle very similar to this is shown in the book by Henri Vever La Bijouterie Francaise au XIX Siecle, pg. 279, these scent bottles are named Les Bulles de Savon (1844) and Vever names the makers as Morel and Duponchel.

    Condition Report*:

Light bend in the straw used to blow the seed pearl bubble, minor pitting to enamel, missing flakes throughout the glass bottle, climbing putti may have been reapplied, some rubbing to the gilt elements, otherwise with surface scratches indicative of age, use and polishing.
